Hi, I’m Arek, and here’s my story

I was born in 1992. I am married and a father of one. Currently based in Warsaw.

It all began when I was a teenager and played a lot of online shooters, Unreal Tournament and Counter-Strike. My team needed a website, so I took the task of setting one up myself. However, I didn’t know how to design or code. Nevertheless, I learned the basics of front-end development rather quickly. A book gifted by my elder brother was a huge help there.

Hosting a Behance Portfolio Review event – May 2015

I was confident I could code for a few good years. But in high school, I bitterly validated my dream of becoming a professional developer – it was not for me.

Luckily, there was a graphic design class, and I got hooked. Initially, I was designing posters and simple websites, but I discovered User Experience Design around the time of my graduation. At this moment, I realized this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I fell in love with the idea of designing easy-to-use yet powerful applications that users would love, and I’d be able to validate my work.

The essential task in my job is balancing the needs of users, business, and technology. Some might say this is cliche and that the users’ needs are the only thing a UX Designer should care about, but it’s not true. It’s impossible to deliver a great user experience if there’s no technology aligned and the business needs are not fulfilled. Don’t get me wrong – I am the users’ advocate, but I don’t unquestioningly believe that this is the holy grail.

Home Office – February 2023

For many years, I’ve been observing constant online battles about the job titles in our field. I call myself a Product Designer. I would describe myself as a UX Designer with a background in graphic design, so I have no problems with handling the visual part of the user interface. At the same time, I feel comfortable planning a design process, performing a user interview, facilitating a workshop, or collaborating with a PO on a product strategy.

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck us in 2020, and there were many layoffs, numerous people wanted to change their career paths. Some decided to try UX Design. Since I had a bit of luck on my path, I decided to become a mentor.

For more than a year, I was giving away a considerable portion of my after-hours time to people who needed a design crit on their portfolio, guidance on what they should learn next, or to prepare for a job interview.

Some of them succeeded, and I’m incredibly grateful that I was able to help them a little in their struggle.

In 2021, I joined ADPList, where I offer a few hours per month for free. Head over to the Teaching page to learn more.
